Oral health has become an essential factor to consider because it is linked to heart disease and diabetes. “Bad” bacteria in the mouth can enter the bloodstream and adversely affect your entire body. The most common conditions associated with poor oral health are cavities, gingivitis, periodontal disease, and bad breath (halitosis).

Good Choices For Your Oral Health

Step 1: Brush your teeth at least twice every day.

Your first and most important step to good oral health is brushing your teeth as often as you remember. Brushing twice a day is the best way to get all the bacteria in between your teeth cleaned away. If you forget to brush for three days, your breath will probably stink even more. Don’t wait until the next morning to brush because you’ll almost lose the chance to prevent lousy breath overnight. You should also ensure that you spit after brushing your teeth (this helps clean out any food debris).

Step 2: Floss every night before bed.

Flossing your teeth at night is the other most crucial step to preventing bad breath and cavities. Like brushing your teeth, flossing removes those bacteria that are living between your teeth. It can help prevent cavities from forming. If you don’t floss before bed, your mouth will be full of bacteria at night, making you get more cavities.

Step 3: Brush and floss every morning before going to bed

If possible, you should also brush and floss in the morning because this helps keep plaque off your teeth throughout the day. Brush for about 2 minutes and floss for about 1 minute each time. Be sure to brush gently on the gum line because that area is more likely to have plaque.

Step 4: Brush after every meal.

A lot of bacteria live on the tongue, so make sure to brush the back of the tongue too. In addition, make sure to brush at least twice a day because you don’t know what problems you may have missed during your brushing. If you eat something sticky, like caramel or something with sugar in it, then brush your teeth after eating that. Brushing your teeth before eating something can make the food stick to your teeth more.

Step 5: Use a mouthwash that’s antiseptic or alcohol-free.

Mouthwashes that are antiseptic or alcohol-free are easier on your mouth. Antiseptic mouthwashes kill bacteria in your mouth, but they also dry out your mouth, which can lead to dryness of the lips and cracked lips. Alcohol-free mouthwash won’t dry out your lips as severely as an antiseptic one, but it may not kill as many bacteria. Any mouthwash will help and prevent you from getting cavities, but you must take care of your teeth even if you don’t brush and floss.

Step 6: Avoid smoking cigarettes, if possible

If you’re a smoker, quitting is essential to good oral health. Smoking is terrible for the whole body, including your teeth, because it can cause stains on them, which discolor your teeth, and can cause cavities. People who smoke also tend to have bad breath because they absorb the toxins from smoking into their lungs, which are breathed out into their mouths through the nose.

A lot of people think that their teeth are too old or that their teeth are rotting, but this is not the case. Bad breath or “halitosis” can be caused by bad habits like smoking cigarettes and eating a lot of sugar and other harmful foods.
